4.1 Prediction markets

  • Founders Fund led Polymarket's $45M Series B (May 2024, $70M across two rounds). Founders Fund partner Joey Krug said the firm had "a habit of checking Polymarket at times of breaking news" (Business Wire, Bloomberg) [V-s]. Former CFTC chair Giancarlo advises it.
  • 1789 Capital (the fund backed by Donald Trump Jr.) invested an amount reported in "the double-digit millions," and Trump Jr. joined Polymarket as a strategic adviser (26 Aug 2025) (Reuters) [V-s].
  • The CFTC cleared Polymarket's US return (3 Sept 2025) after it bought the licensed exchange QCEX for $112M, and issued a no-action letter on reporting requirements (Reuters) [V-s]. This came one week after the Trump Jr. investment.
  • Intercontinental Exchange (ICE, the NYSE owner) committed up to $2B at an approximately $8B pre-money valuation and will distribute Polymarket data to institutions (ICE IR, 7 Oct 2025) [V-s].
  • The DARPA comparison: the 2003 Policy Analysis Market (part of FutureMAP, under Poindexter's Information Awareness Office) let people bet on Middle East events and was cancelled within days after an outcry in Congress [R].
  • UH lead check: "Polymarket was born out of a desire to resurrect PAM; Thiel's role in privatizing failed DARPA programs." → PARTLY SUPPORTED.
    • Supported: the conceptual lineage (event markets as intelligence aggregation, with Robin Hanson's ideas behind both) and the Founders Fund/Thiel-Fellow money (Krug).
    • Supported: the IAO-to-Palantir parallel is widely noted.
    • Not shown: any documented intent to revive PAM, and any government use of Polymarket data for intelligence [U]. ICE's data distribution is commercial, not governmental.
