October 2026
2.1 Peter Thiel
- Who: co-founder of PayPal and Palantir (chairman), Founders Fund. Calls himself a "small-o orthodox Christian" (Guardian) [V].
- Antichrist lectures, first series (San Francisco, Commonwealth Club, Sept–Oct 2025):
- "In the 21st century, the Antichrist is a Luddite who wants to stop all science. It's someone like Greta or Eliezer." (15 Sept) [V] (Straits Times/WaPo)
- He called critics "legionnaires of the Antichrist" (WaPo) [V].
- He told Musk his Giving Pledge money would go "to left-wing nonprofits that will be chosen by Bill Gates" (Reuters) [V].
- Later series:
- Itinerary: San Francisco (Sept–Oct 2025), Paris (January 2026), Rome (March 2026, where Catholic commentators and Italian politicians pushed back), then Nashville (Fortune) [V]. (v2 had the Rome date as unknown and omitted Paris; the Nashville Scene's "third iteration" wording doesn't count Paris.)
- Nashville, Grand Lodge of Tennessee, 28 Sept 2026. Journalists weren't allowed in, but the Scene obtained transcripts. Quote: "There's one existential risk that nobody seems to want to discuss … the risk of a totalitarian one-world government." (Nashville Scene) [V]
- Remaining talks: "The End of Empire" (Oct 5), "Velocity of Antichrist" (Oct 12), "New Rome" (Oct 19) [V].
- From recordings of the Sept 28 and Oct 5 Nashville talks obtained by Politico, as quoted by Fortune [V]:
- "Many people know that AI is politically unpopular and want to leverage that to boost their own popularity. Both Obama and the pope fall into this category. Obama knows the Democrats have no ideas, but they can at least oppose AI."
- On Pope Leo, whose first encyclical Magnifica Humanitas is about AI: "He needed something politically popular to distract from the church's child sex abuse scandals, and he found it in AI."
- Effective altruism "has brainwashed a significant portion of the people working on AI."
- Fortune also notes that Thiel is now out of step with AI CEOs: Altman and Musk publicly backed Dario Amodei's call (Sept 2026) to slow frontier capability growth [V].
- Political money:
- $15M to Protect Ohio Values PAC for Vance: $10M on 12 Mar 2021, $3.5M on 18 Apr 2022, $1.5M on 25 Apr 2022 (OpenSecrets, Politico) [V].
- At least $200K more to the same PAC through his dark-money group Per Aspera Policy (CBS) [V].
- $15M to Saving Arizona PAC for Blake Masters, rising to about $20M (Politico, OpenSecrets) [V-s].
- State contracts: ICE paid Palantir $30M for "ImmigrationOS" (April 2025, runs to Sept 2027) (Wired, USAspending) [V].
- Yarvin: Founders Fund invested in Yarvin's Tlon/Urbit in 2013 (a $1.1M seed round with a16z). Tlon said Thiel wasn't personally involved (The Verge) [V].
- Charter cities and Praxis: Pronomos Capital is Thiel-backed. It invested in Praxis's seed round (with Joe Lonsdale and others) and in a later round (archive of the Praxis seed announcement, CB Insights) [V-s]. Pronomos and Próspera are [R]: there's widely reported overlap, but I didn't re-check it this pass.
- New Zealand:
- Citizenship came in 2011 after only 12 days in the country, under "exceptional circumstances." In his application he wrote that NZ "aligns more with my view of the future" (NZ Herald, NYT) [V-s].
- His Wānaka lodge was refused by commissioners in Aug 2022, and the Environment Court dismissed his appeal in May 2024 (NZ Herald, ODT) [V].
- He has called The Sovereign Individual the book that most influenced him (Forbes 2014). The book names NZ a "domicile of choice" (Guardian 2018) [V].
- Eschatology: Girard, plus Schmitt's katechon. Regulation and world government are the Antichrist's vehicle, and tech growth is the restrainer.
- What the evidence doesn't show: that his theology dictates specific federal decisions, or any coordination with Chabad or Israeli religious-nationalist actors. His Antichrist (a regulator promising safety) is the opposite of the dispensationalist one (a tech-empowered world ruler). His NZ project is now a bare, unbuildable estate, not a functioning refuge.
